Dan Bilzerian, the Instagram superstar who has also taken turns as a poker player and an actor, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on charges that he has possession of bomb-making components.
The arrest follows a warrant from Clark County, Nevada that had been under seal since early November.
It appears that the charges stemmed from a Las Vegas Metro Police investigation on November 4, when a field of debris was left after an explosion in a remote desert area.
That lead to the sealed warrant, which likely remained secret to allow for an ongoing investigation that led up to Bilzerian’s arrest.
Bilzerian Possessed Components for Explosive Mixture
According to TMZ, the criminal complaint says that Bilzerian possessed components including ammonium, aluminum powder and ammonium nitrate mix. When combined, these can become an explosive similar to Tannerite, a substance typically used to make explosive targets for firearms practice.
It was initially reported that Bilzerian was being held without bail, but he was released on Wednesday afternoon.
Another man, Jeremy Guymon, was also arrested on the same felony count. The two men are apparently being represented by Las Vegas attorney David Chesnoff, the same lawyer who has been defending the Phuas in the case of the sports betting ring being operated out of a Caesars Palace villa.
“We’re looking forward to having this resolved in court,” said Chesnoff, who also said he has yet to meet with Bilzerian about the charges.
Bilzerian and Guymon are scheduled to make their first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on January 9.
Bilzerian is Social Media Superstar, Poker Player, Actor
Bilzerian is certainly no stranger to firearms and explosives. Known as the “King of Instagram,” Bilzerian has frequently posted photos and videos of himself with high-powered weapons to his social media accounts, often accompanied by numerous women.
Perhaps the most famous of these demonstrations involved Bilzerian driving a tank over a car in a short video.
For Bilzerian, 2014 has been a year filled with legal issues. Earlier in the year, Bilzerian sued the makers of the film Lone Survivor, claiming that he loaned them money in exchange for a part of guaranteed length that was mostly cut from the final film.
In May, Bilzerian was sued by adult film actress Janice Griffith, who Bilzerian threw from a roof for a Hustler magazine photo shoot. Griffith was supposed to land in a pool, but came up short and injured her foot.
In August, Bilzerian found himself in the middle of a brawl in a Miami nightclub. During the incident, he kicked a woman in the face, leading to him being banned from the establishment.
In the world of poker, Bilzerian is best known for making a deep run in the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event, where he finished in 180th place, garnering plenty of air time on ESPN’s broadcast along the way.
He has also found some success as an actor, having appeared as a stunt man in Olympus Has fallen and taken roles in films such as The Other Woman and The Equalizer.
Bilzerian is a trust fund millionaire and the son of Paul Bilzerian, a corporate takeover specialist who was convicted of fraud in the 1980’s.
