We have some good news for poker players in the northeast. The world’s largest online poker site, PokerStars, has announced it will offer poker and sports betting for those in Pennsylvania once the license is approved by the state.

Pennsylvania will be the second US state, along with neighboring New Jersey, to have legal PokerStars online poker games.

Mutually Beneficial Partnership

The poker site’s parent company, The Stars Group, found a way into Pennsylvania by partnering with the Mount Airy Casino Resort, a casino and hotel in the town of Mount Pocono.

Pennsylvania passed an online gambling bill in 2017 but has yet to formally license the pending site operators and, thus, doesn’t have poker sites in operation just yet. Many experts anticipate a late-2018 launch date.

It is required that the operator applying for a license must already own a land-based casino in the state. That means standalone poker sites such as PokerStars are ineligible to open a poker site on their own in Pennsylvania.

That is where Mount Airy, a land-based casino, comes into play. PokerStars is partnering with the casino and the partnership appears to be mutually beneficial.

For PokerStars, as discussed, it gives the poker site a way into a second state, which is a step in the right direction. For Mount Airy, a casino that opened in 2007, it gives the land-based casino some much needed attention and potentially another revenue stream.

Mount Airy is often overlooked by the larger casinos in the state such as Parx Casino in Philadelphia and Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The town of Mount Pocono is in the northeastern part of the state and isn’t close to any major cities.

Partnering with the world’s largest online poker brand could help boost attention to the casino.

“As one of Pennsylvania’s leaders in entertainment, offering internet sports wagering and gaming and partnering with The Stars Group is the obvious next step for us to continue diversifying our casino offerings. Introducing internet gaming through The Stars Group will provide compelling opportunities for our customers, particularly our younger customers, who are ready to experience the next gaming challenge,” Mount Airy Vice President of Marketing and Gaming Operations Vincent Jordan said in a press release.

Games to be Offered

When PokerStars joins the Pennsylvania market, the online gambling giant will bring along its BetStars platform, a sports betting site, along with poker games.

BetStars is already available in New Jersey following the US Supreme Court’s recent ruling to overturn a federal sports betting ban.

Pennsylvania will soon allow sports betting in the state.
